Independence Day

The Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a wonderful time for all age groups. Most of the festivities are ones that everyone can take part in. There are fireworks to watch, barbecues filled with delicious food, parades to enjoy, and family and friends to spend time with. These activities are ones that an older adult in your family may enjoy; however, you will want to make sure you are keeping your loved one safe on a hot summer day.

Please remember to keep enough water available for everyone especially your senior loved ones. Make sure to have easy access to water and that every person with you is drinking plenty of water. Having foods that are high in water content are a good way to avoid dehydration.

Wear sunscreen and remember to reapply it. As we age our skin is much more fragile and can sunburn. Also, take breaks out of the sun and cool off. Have a place where you can take your loved one and relax. This will also help stay better hydrated. Take umbrellas to minimize sun exposure. Along with this know if your loved one is on any medication that increases their sun sensitivity.

Make sure you have some downtime scheduled during your day. Your loved one does not have as much energy as they used to; so having a day that is packed full of activities of one after another is not the best for them. So have some time where they can rest from activities, the heat, and all the things going on.

Here at Cache Valley Assisted Living we hope you enjoy your 4th of July. We have been having 4th of July activities for our residents and we have had a great time. Have a fun and safe 4th of July.
